Santa Ana City Council members, following a decades-old pattern of not seeking competitive bids for its home and business trash collection contract, have delayed competition to the point where Waste Management, Inc.’s contract from 1993 – which was originally set to expire in 1998 – will continue until the year 2020.

CalPensions: CalPERS stays the course on rates, investing risk

Last December CalPERS lowered its investment earnings forecast used to discount future pension costs from 7.5 to 7 percent. To replace the lower expected earnings, local government rate increases begin next year and slowly increase until 2024.

Sac Bee: Trump Files SCOTUS Brief Against Unions in Janus v AFSCME

A decision against AFSCME would forbid public employee unions from collecting so-called “fair share” fees from workers who do not want to join labor groups but benefit from representation. California is one of 22 states that allow public employee unions to charge them.
