Voice of OC: Santa Ana searches for money to cover police raises

Santa Ana officials are looking for money in other parts of the Police Department budget to fund $4.3 million for police pay increases this fiscal year, as City Council members continue to be deadlocked over whether to fund the raises.

During his tenure as chief, Elgin made it a goal to increase the number of sworn police officers serving Garden Grove – the fifth-largest city in Orange County, yet with one of the lowest police-to-population ratios.

 

OC Register: Buena Park, Costa Mesa and Placentia zero in on homeless shelter sites

Funding for the Placentia and Buena Park shelters will come from a $12 million state grant awarded in November to address homelessness in north Orange County. Costa Mesa will use city funds.

 

OC Register: Inmate riot erupts at two barracks within the James A. Musick facility near Irvine

It was the second case of large-scale violence at Orange County jails in recent months. In December, 30-40 inmates attacked five deputies at the Central Jail in Santa Ana during a morning clothes exchange. None of the deputies had life-threatening injuries.

Forecasters said they expect snow accumulations of 1 to 4 inches, with 4 to 6 inches possible across the eastern San Gabriel Mountains in L.A. County, along with dangerous winter weather driving conditions due to snow showers, icy roadways, and gusty winds.

 

Daily Pilot: Costa Mesa council approves lease to open temporary homeless shelter at Westside church

Under the agreement, which also must be approved by the Westside church’s board, the shelter would open in April and operate for roughly a year — at which point the facility would move to a longer-term location.

 

OC Register: Rescheduled Orange County Black History Parade will fill streets in downtown Anaheim on Saturday

Bands, floats, horseback riders and representatives from community organizations will march up Anaheim Boulevard from Walnut Grove Park to East Center Street. Bobby McDonald, president of the Orange County Black Chamber of Commerce, is this year’s grand marshal.
