Sheriff’s officials denied the allegations, but on Friday, a jury in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom sided with the deputy, awarding him $8.1 million and concluding that he faced “severe and pervasive” harassment after protesting illegal orders.

The figures show that hiring has slowed this year as the U.S.-China trade war has intensified, global growth has slowed and businesses have reduced their investment spending. Even so, recent job gains have averaged 157,000 over the past three months, enough to absorb new job seekers.
