OMEA Negotiations Update – May 2, 2025

Dear OMEA Member,

Your OMEA negotiations team met with the City on Tuesday, April 29, for our fourth bargaining session. This was our first meeting since April 2, as the City cancelled the sessions scheduled for April 10 and April 15. Despite these delays, your team was prepared and engaged, and we will continue pushing forward with additional sessions scheduled for May 5, May 7, May 20, and May 22.

City’s Counter Proposal:
Unfortunately, the City’s response to our April 2 proposal was wholly inadequate. During a time in which the City faces a $19 million deficit, we brought forward a range of low- and no-cost proposals aimed at preserving services, retaining staff, and navigating the crisis responsibly. Rather than seriously consider those ideas, the City chose to minimize the value of its workforce — the very people who make this city function.

This disconnect is more than frustrating — it’s demoralizing. It suggests that the City sees its workforce not as partners in solving problems, but as costs to be managed. Budgets are important, but they are only tools. It’s people who deliver services, solve problems, and uphold the trust of the public.

What Comes Next:
We remain committed to negotiating in good faith and continuing to bring practical, responsible solutions to the table. But if the City’s approach continues on its current path, your OMEA Board and fellow members will be prepared to take our message beyond the bargaining room. If needed, we will speak directly to City Council and the community to ensure the value of your work is seen and heard.

Respect isn’t a budget item — it’s a decision. And the City needs to make the right one.

We will continue to keep you updated. In the meantime, thank you for your professionalism, perseverance, and unity. This isn’t just about wages or benefits — it’s about recognizing the value of the people who hold this city together, every single day.

In solidarity,

OMEA
